Alchemy has historically been a strong option for gold-making, and the logic is straightforward: potions are used by a very large part of the playerbase, so demand tends to be broad compared to many other crafting paths.
Another important point is that Alchemy mostly produces consumables. That often means repeat buying — players restock for raids, Mythic+, or PvP, instead of making a single purchase once.
In the past, one issue could be competition from a “main alchemist” on your realm. With the modern profession direction system, that pressure can be lower: specializations split the market into niches, and Crafting Orders also simplify how buyers and crafters find each other.
The classic pairing is Herbalism, since herbs are the main material input for Alchemy. If you already have a consistent material source (alts, guild supply, Auction House, etc.), then your second profession can be whatever you prefer.
Both professions can be valuable, and both offer items that players consume regularly — but they fill different needs. With a new expansion cycle and a reworked profession ecosystem, it’s hard to predict where each server’s economy will settle early on.
The practical way to choose is to look at your realm: if Alchemy is already heavily saturated, Inscription may be easier to enter (and the reverse can be true as well). Also consider which profession helps your own character goals the most.
Neither option is inherently “wrong” — results often depend on how you invest your specialization points and which market you decide to target.
